Since they opened in July, owners Joe and Mae have made Purple Monkey Antiques a haven for locals to shop. More than just antiques, the store in the quaint village of Weedsport boasts an ample selection of country store items, including snacks, drinks, old fashioned candy, canned goods, pickles, relishes, jams, and more. They have stocked the shelves with collectible gifts such as figurines, and of course, glassware and antiques.
I was surprised by the furniture. That’s right, furniture. Mae proclaims the newly refurbished furniture, custom-built primitive cabinetry, plus harvest tables have been a real hit. While perusing through the shop, one can browse indefinitely and wonder how the gifts, furniture, and antiques arrive at their current state?
Joe and Mae took over the shop from the previous owner and talked terms when their existing business, MJ Artifacts, stopped in its tracks. The wanderers of good finds would travel around and open their antiques and collectibles and furniture shop in different locations across the nation. A sort of pop-up of sorts for collectors. They would also travel to auctions and tradeshows. It was at one of these where they met Bob, the previous owner of Purple Monkey.
Purple Monkey has been in businesses for a few decades, and they discovered the business through their friend Bob in Brimfield, Mass. The previous owner told them they were destined to take over the shop, and while it seemed not an option at the time, Mae realizes that it was indeed fate.
“Sometimes you have to look at the blessings in disguise,” Mae said. “We are gratefulĀ for the opportunity.”
She hopes the community will support them, especially during these times. And in these times, it’s places like Purple Monkey Antiques, the shop that has a lot to offer, that remind us of the American Dream.
