Mother’s Day was the offshoot of an idea in the early 1900s from Anna Jarvis who wished to honor her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, for all her sacrifices and dedication and to incorporate all other mothers as well. From working to support a family, to running a household, listening to woes and kissing boo boos, we continue that tradition.
In the mid-20th Century, carnations became the symbol of the day. First Lady Mamie Eisenhower popularized the flower. It was very common to see proud mothers wearing a corsage on Mother’s Day Sunday, their daughters doing the same, and occasionally a son sporting a boutinniere. Wearing white meant the mother had passed away but pink or red meant she was still with us.
Although this custom has dissipated over the years, flowers are still a lovely gift for mom. From a flat of bedding plants, a hanging basket, bouquet of roses, or a toddler’s handful of dandelions, moms and grandmas enjoy flowers.
Another option would be a basket of her favorite non-essential items like bath bombs, lotions, or scents. There are a number of appliances, like a foot bath or massager, that are a reminder of your love throughout the year. Aromatherapy items are a must.
There are a number of digital gadgets that will let you assemble a montage of photos, or you can opt for a traditional frame. Consider some favorite snapshots from vacations, important moments in her life, her family home, or just silly events that will provide storytelling.
Jewelry is always a good idea. There are various necklaces, bracelets, and pendants that are appropriate. Check out craft websites or shop at the mall. Many include birthstones of children and grandchildren. Some include the ability to add on as the family expands. Engraving makes it even more personal.
If she loves to cook, try some elevated versions of ordinary items, like infused vinegars, a container of saffron (the world’s most expensive spice), or some appliance or tool she has been drooling over.
The gardening or outdoor lady might enjoy a new kneeler, especially one with handles, converts to a seat, and folds for storage. Some even come with a pouch to hold the trowels, gloves, clippers, and water bottle. If you are handy or crafty, construct and install a vertical garden. There are a number of trellises or stackable pots that will expand her current space.
Although gift cards are sometimes thought of as a convenient gift, they can be meaningful when they are for a special treat that mom would not spend on herself like a spa day or an evening at a play or musical event. Especially for younger children, a series of coupons for work days or special tasks is a good choice.
Depending on your perspective, gift buying can be rewarding or a challenge. As long as it is a sincere appreciation of your feelings, it will be fine. Top it off with a slice of cake, because who doesn’t like cake, and you have a party!
