May Festivals and Celebrations

8 May 2024

May is one of those transitional months when the weather is great and there are many events planned to take advantage of the perfect temperatures after the dreary winter and before the heat of summer.

May is also Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month as well as Jewish American Heritage Month.  This recognizes the contributions of these individuals to our country and the world.  Haul out a map or globe and see just how many Pacific islands there are.  Explore the various Asian countries and their differences.  Read about Jewish immigrants.

May 1 – May Day.  This is about half way between the spring equinox and summer solstice.  It has origins in ancient Europe.  It’s a great day to put together a basket of goodies for a shut in or other acquaintance.  While the date has passed at this point, you can still perform some small act of kindness to usher in the change in seasons.

May 4 – Star Wars Day.  May the Fourth (Force) be with you.  You might not up up for all nine movies, but Speak like Yoda, you can.

May 4 – Kentucky Derby Day.  Celebrate with a mint julep.

May 5 – Cinco de Mayo.  Make it taco Sunday and the adults can have a margarita or sangria.

May 5 – 11 – Nurses’ Appreciation Week.  Just getting off shift?  Try 11:00 a.m. At the Three Brothers Wineries, 623 Lerch Road, Geneva, for 50% off wine slushies and tastings.  Healthcare workers just need to show a valid ID.  https://www.3brotherswinery.com/pages/events

May 10 – 19 – Rochester’s Lilac Festival.  Free and full of events and entertainment.

May 12 – Mother’s Day.  Make your reservations now for brunch, lunch, or whatever.  There are many choices in the Finger Lakes region that can accommodate mom’s taste buds and provide a warm and cozy atmosphere for a family gathering.
