Americans with enslaved people in their ancestry have unique challenges when it comes to tracing their family trees. Because enslaved peopled were considered property, they were prohibited from owning land, property, businesses, reading, writing, attending school, and voting. It’s the legal records of these activities on which we base much of our genealogical research. Without them, what do we do? In this workshop we will learn about different sources for researching the records that do exist, ways to access them, and how to start compiling records of your own.
