Exploring Black Wine No.1 Class

February 24 @ 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm

In 1940, John June Lewis, Sr. opened Woburn Winery in Virginia – selling wines made from estate grapes through his passing in 1974. It is thought to be the first Black American-owned commercial winery – and the only winery operating in Virginia at the time. In 1972, Raymond Fedderman opened what is thought to be the second Black-owned winery with Fedderman Wines in our very own Prattsburg, NY. Today, there are over 11,000 wineries in the U.S. and less than 1% are Black-owned or made. But, within that small fraction is a dynamic group of people making impactful wines that feel far larger than their market share. All here because Lewis, Sr. and Fedderman paved the way. Join New York Kitchen Beverage Education Manager Maiah Johnson Dunn for an exploration of Black-owned and/or made wines. From Theodora Lee to Dwayne Wade and André Hueston Mack, you’ll discover a world of wine you’ve been missing in this bi-monthly series featuring 5 wines and a pairing plate.
