    The Rook is a little restaurant serving big flavors in the form of comfort food and craft cocktails. Our eatery was founded by Gentry Morris (chef/owner) and partners in 2016. In 2018 Manny Flores joined the team to manage the bar’s beverage program. To adapt to the recent pandemic, all our food and drink is carefully prepared for takeout, meant to be enjoyed picnic-style.

    Went on a trip to finger lakes and stop by here to eat something before crashing in the hotel. The food was amazing. The servers were really nice and ambient was incredible. If I ever go back to Ithaca will definitely visit this place again.

    This place has reliable outdoor dining, which I wish more restaurants out here would do, given the whole pandemic thing. Maybe it's their pared down pandemic menu, but I have never quite been blown away by this place. I don't know what their non-pandemic menu looks like, but when we brought my partner's family (which has two picky kids) here when they visited, and they found the menu a bit limited, so this might not be the best option for families with younger kids. I have been here two times (again, the outdoor dining and ambiance is the biggest draw for me) and I think I've had almost everything on the pandemic food menu. The duck fat fried chicken was good, but not amazing. They definitely pre-cook the meat before frying, which I know helps with the tenderness and such, but it feels a bit overcooked at times. My squat, elderly dog absolutely loves it though, because she has managed to get into and devour our leftovers on more than one occasion. I don't really understand what they were going for with the watery sauce that comes with the chicken. It kinda looks like buffalo sauce or hot sauce but it's not spicy at all, just sort of mildly tomato flavored. The chicken sandwich was good, but the slaw needs salt and more seasoning, as do nearly all the sides. The collards, potato salad and slaw taste like someone just completely forgot to add any salt. The burger was solid. Ribs (which might have just been a summer thing) were also solid but not falling off the bone.

    I love this place. A limited seasonal menu that is well thought out. I had the fried chicken. It was to-die-for. My husband had the ribs. They were so good, cooked to competition perfection. Elote, get it, thank me later. Oh, and the grilled bacon-wrapped dates with goat cheese; need I say more?

    Overall, not the worst. Definitely not anywhere near the best. The good: Their fried chicken is seasoned and breaded nicely, portions are generous. The atmosphere is generally nice but the nicest outdoor seating with the lights is reserved for larger parties so it was disappointing my girlfriend and I instead had to sit at a couples table in front of the gate to the alley they keep the dumpsters. The bad: The weird salsa / sauce they serve with the chicken was terrible. The flavors in it clashed with the seasoning. The sauce was so bad it ruined the chicken. Their potato salad was underwhelming, esp given it cost $7. Essentially it was bland, dry, and had way too much celery. About all you could taste was celery. There isn’t really much to choose from on the menu either, so it’s extra disappointing how bad this meal was overall considering there’s only a few dishes to perfect.

    These folks are very likely serving the best food in Ithaca right now. The schnitzel is unbelievable, there aren't even words for it. It might be the best thing I've ever eaten.
