Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar

8 August 2023

Every day it seems we read an ad or see an infomercial on tv or streaming on a device touting the benefits of some ordinary food or drink. Generally they say they will make you a better person for consuming them. As it turns out, apple cider vinegar actually does have some health benefits.

It is made by fermenting the sugar from apples, which turns into acetic acid, and is the source of its claims of benefits. This acid is the source of the strong odor and flavor. If it is organic and unfiltered, it also contains a substance called “mother”. Mother contains strands of proteins, enzymes, and friendly bacteria. Researchers, and proponents of natural substances for healing, contend that is the source of benefits. Actually apple cider vinegar contains only few vitamins or minerals but some may provide amino acids and antioxidants.

Kill Bacteria

Vinegar is a home remedy to treat nail fungus, lice, and ear infections. Some people have used it on warts or acne, but there are no definitive results to show that this is an effective treatment.

As a food preservative, studies show that vinegar will inhibit the growth of some bacteria, including E. coli.

Blood Sugar

The most beneficial method of controlling blood sugar is through a balanced diet, reasonable exercise, and monitoring levels. Some older adults may have difficulties since chronic conditions like diabetes come with age. However, studies show that apple cider vinegar, used in appropriate amounts and moderation, may improve insulin levels and can lower sugar levels following meals. This does not mean you don’t need to take prescribed medications or stop seeing your doctor. It can simply be an aid to better health. Always run new dietary supplements by your medical team before jumping into something like this.

Weight Loss

Here’s another example of some studies that indicate apple cider vinegar can help suppress the feeling of hunger for up to two hours. That means less snacking and reduced weight. However, other studies show no long term effect in the relationship of vinegar and continued weight loss. The good news is that apple cider vinegar is only 3 calories per tablespoon.

Heart Health

While heart disease remains a leading cause of death, there are quite a few factors that are involved including genetics, life style, and other issues. The studies with apple cider vinegar are very limited and there are no conclusive results at this time. It will take more years and more detailed studies in both animals and humans to provide definitive answers. However, there are indications that vinegar may benefit cholesterol levels.

Skin

Looking good is not just an ego boost but can play a part in social interactions. Human skin is naturally acidic. However those who suffer with eczema have skin that is less acidic than normal. Using a diluted amount of apple cider vinegar topically can bring the skin back into pH balance and help with this condition. Conversely, alkaline treatments, soaps, or lotions could very well cause a flare up, which is what you want to avoid.

The main point is to discuss this with a dermatologist first and the key word is diluted. Straight vinegar on the skin can easily case burns.

If you want to increase your use of apple cider vinegar the easiest method is to incorporate more of its use in cooking. Taking a swig of it is rather distasteful, although diluting it in water is better and also better for the enamel on your teeth. If you have options, go for organic and unfiltered products that contain “mother,” as mentioned early in this article.
