WHAT IS VINTAGE BASE BALL?
Vintage base ball (spelled more often as two words until 1896) is a loose term for amateur baseball played by the various rules, customs, and equipment of the 1800’s. Men and women play with wooden bats and no gloves (in some cases) and period accurate attire to replicate the game as it was played during its formative years.
The Delhi Polecats (.delcovintagebaseball.org) and Bovina Dairymen (bovinadairymen.org) are two visiting vintage base ball teams from the Delaware County Vintage Base Ball Association who will play with the outfits, rules, and equipment used by their base ball “peers” from over 150 years ago.
The History Center in Tompkins County thanks our partners for this event: Delaware County Vintage Base Ball Association, Bovina Dairymen, Delhi Polecats, NYS Parks, Shortstop Deli, and the Wharton Studio Museum.
This event was made possible in part by a grant from the Tompkins County Tourism Program.
This event will take place in the traditional and contemporary lands of the Gayogo̱hó:nǫ’ Nation (often known by the mispronunciation Cayuga), one of the Six Nations of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. Learn more at thehistorycenter.net/land-acknowledgment.
